YSR Congress Chief Jaganmohan Reddy gets bail in disproportionate assets case

A special CBI court in Hyderabad today granted conditional bail to YSR Congrss party President and Kadappa Lok Sabha Member, Y.S. Jaganmohan Reddy in his disproportionate assets case. The court which has reserved his judgement last week over his bail petition pronounced the verdict this evening. The court granted the bail on 2 lakh rupees personal bond and two sureties of equal amount.

The court asked him not to leave Hyderabad and not to try to influence any person in connection with ongoing investigation into his case. The court also stated that the CBI may approach the court for cancellation of bail if Jaganmohan Reddy is found to have violated the conditions stipulated by the court.

The son of former Chief Minister late YS Rajasekhara Reddy, Jagan Reddy was arrested on May 27th, 2012 on charges of disproportionate assets. The CBI had accused Jagan of amassing huge wealth through illegal means by misusing his father’s office. The CBI has so far filed 10 charge-sheets in his assets case.

Earlier, the Supreme Court had rejected Jagan's bail plea and asked the investigating agency to complete their probe within four months that ended in the first week of this month. AIR Correspondent in his report says that it is celebrations galore at YSR Congress party headquarters in Hyderabad now. As soon as the news about the grant of bail to Jagan broke out, the party leaders and activists, with beaming faces celebrated the occasion with bursting of crackers and distribution of sweets.

Along with Jagan’s family members, the party leaders have been eagerly waiting for the release of their leader to steer the party ahead of upcoming elections. Jagan’s mother YS Vijayamma and his sister Sharmila have been looking after party’s affairs during his long stay in jail. Jagan left the congress party and formed the YSR Congress party in 2010.

The Andhra Pradesh High Court ordered a CBI probe into his assets in July 2011, which was later upheld by the Supreme Court. It is to be seen whether Jagan’s re-entry into active political scene will become a factor in the statehood agitation which is continuing unabated even after 55 days.
