The Bharatiya Janata Party government led by B S Yeddyurappa today won the confidence vote in the Karnataka Legislative Assembly.As soon as the House met for the day, the Assembly speaker K G Bopaiah arrived in the House and put the one line motion moved by Chief Minister B S Yeddyurappa for vote. After the voice vote, the Speaker declared that the confidence motion has been passed.There was severe protests by the opposition Congress and Janata Dal(S) legislators when the proceedings were on. As the House plunged into further uproar, Bopaiah adjourned the House sine die.Soon after the announcement of the Speaker, the opposition Congress and the JD(S) convened their respective legislature party meetings in the Vidhana Soudha itself and submitted a memorandum to the Governor seeking head count of all Legislatures and the dismissal of the BJP government.Earlier this morning, the state Assembly Speaker K G Bopaiah disqualified 16 rebel MLAs, including 11 from BJP under the provision of the anti defection law. With this the strength in the 224-member Assembly was brought down to 208. Accordingly, the number of votes needed to prove majority also came down to 105. AIR correspondent Sudhindra reports from Bangalore that in din and commotion, the Chief Minister moved the motion and by voice vote it was passed by the Speaker as the police and the Marshals haggled to control the situation. The Leader of the Opposition from Congress Siddaramaiah left the house in a huff after the motion was passed. He took strong objection to Police Commissioner Shankar Bidri entering the house in uniform and with his service revolver. The role of Speaker is under cloud as the Opposition started shouting slogans against him. The Opposition claims that it has the strength of 106 and the Governor should conduct the head count and nullify the decision taken by the Speaker on the floor of the house. They also say that passing the resolution by voice vote is also inappropriate.Meanwhile, the sixteen MLAs, who were disqualified from their Assembly membership, today moved the Karnataka High Court challenging their disqualification. They have also sought stay of the Speaker's order.The petition is expected to come up for hearing before a division bench headed by Chief Justice J S Khehar later in the day.
