The water level in the Yamuna in the national capital rose to 205.60 meters today which is nearly one metre above the danger mark. The water level has increased following release of 80,000 cusec water by Haryana this morning.Officials fear that the level may even raise up to 207 metres by this evening as Haryana has released nearly 9 lakh cusec water in the last three days. Meanwhile, authorities evacuated more people from low-lying areas.Earlier yesterday, Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit said all measures have been taken to deal with the serious situation. Flood Control Minister Raj Kumar Chouhan said over 100 booster pumps were fitted along the banks of the river to pump out water which may enter the low-lying areas.The flood situation has become critical in western Uttar Pradesh after the release of more water from Hathini Kund and Haridwar barrages during past two days. More than 9 Lakh cusec of water has been released in Yamuna from Hathinikund Barrage while around 5 Lakh cusec of water has been released in Ganga. The river Yamuna is flowing more than two metres above the danger mark in Saharanpur. The road link to Haryana and Punjab has been closed for traffic. About eighteen villages have been inundated in flood water in Bijnore while the river Ramganga is also in spate due to more release of water from Narora Barrage. Our Gorakhpur correspondent reports that the relief work is going on in the flood torn districts of eastern UP.AIR correspondent Salman Haider reports from Gorakhpur that ‘The relief work in worst affected colonelganj tehsil of Gonda is going on but the scarcity of food material and fodder is reported from many places. For, the people still living in marooned area it is difficult to sustain because of the shortage of drinking water, fuel wood and fodder. The administration is supplying them the cooked food. The chief minister Ms Mayawati has instructed the authorities to assess the damage caused due to flood and to appropriately compensate the affected people. However, the government is yet to announce the suspension of the revenue realisation in flood affected areas. The flood relief operation in 105 flood affected villages continues. At least two embankments in Gonda are threatened due to raging Ghaghra. The intermittent rain and spread of disease is increasing the woes of the people. For the flood affected people, it is very hard to carry on in present situation as they had lost everything to flood water and the relief is insufficient for themselves and their cattle. The situation in Bijnore and Lakhimpur Kheri is no better. The river Rapti is about half a metre above the danger level in Gorakhpur but is on receding trend giving some relief to low-lying population. In Uttarakhand, after the heavy rain, snowfall is reported at higher reaches near Joshimath in Chamoli District. The people get respite following the clear weather at different places this morning in the state. According to our Dehradun correpondent the change of weather may control the increasing water level of rivers Ganga and Yamuna in the plane areas.More than 70 villages have been hit due to flood in Yamuna Nagar and Karnal districts of Haryana. Thousand acres of land of these districts have been submerged in water. The flood water has washed away major chunks of national Highway 73 and 73 A in Yamuna Nagar district. Hundreds of vehicles have been stranded on highway as water is flowing nearly 3 feet deep over the road. The over-flowing Yamuna had washed away a bundh in Panipat leaving approximately 90 feet wide breach there. One lakh one thousand cusecs of water has been released from Hathnikund Barrage in Yamuna river today morning. On Thursday night more than 90 thousand cusecs of water had been released from this barrage. According to Executive Engineer of Hathnikung Barrage, the future release of water from Hathnikund depends upon rainfall in encatchment areas of northern hills.
