Yamuna flowing above danger mark

The Yamuna river which is flowing at 206.66 metres, much above the danger mark, has entered some fresh low lying areas of Delhi, including ISBT. An official in flood control department said that the level is likely to touch 206.85 by this after noon. He said, the water level has been increasing as discharged water from Haryana started reaching Delhi. The heavy rain in the National Capital Region has also led to a further increase in the water level of the river. Our correspondent reports the Old Yamuna Bridge has been closed as a precautionary measure and Northern Railways have cancelled 25 trains and diverted 36 others due to the rising flood waters in the Yamuna . AIR correspondent reports that Delhi government says everything is under control and all the necessary arrangements have been taken care of. Hundred big and small pumps have been installed at different locations to pump out water from low lying areas like Ring Road, Okhla, Majnu ka Tila, Burari, Batla House and jahangirpuri. 74 water boats and 68 divers have been placed on stand-by along with a team of National Disaster relief force. Some relief camps have been set up where food, water and medicines are being provided. In Uttar Pradesh, the flood situation is still grim in several districts as the heavy rain is still lashing the catchments of Ganga, Yamuna, Ramganga and Ghaghra. The situation in Farrukhabad has become grim as the level of Ramganga has shot up 10 centimetres above the danger level. In eastern districts, though the rivers, Ghaghra and Rapti are receding but they are still above the danger mark in Faizabad, Ballia and Gorakhpur. AIR correspondent Salman Haider reports that ‘About fifty villages in the basin of Ganga and Ramganga are threatened due to rising of Ramganga. Around two hundred and fifty villages are already affected in the district. Three to four feet water is logged in the forest area of Bijnore. The situation is improving in eastern Uttar Pradesh but one tehsil of Gonda is still badly hit. The relief work is going on in full pace. Meanwhile, heavy rain has lashed this morning in Gorakhpur, Faizabad and Azamgarh divisions. In Haryana, water level in the Yamuna is receding now as the excess water released into the river from Agnikund Barrage during the last days has reached Delhi. The 90-feet breach occured in Yamuna yesterday on embankments between Samsabad and Pathergarh villages of Panipat district has widened further. Water has entered the adjoining fields and villages. The officers of Haryana Irrigation Departement are camping at the sites. In these villages, the standing crops over an area of 2500 acres have been affected due to the breach.
