Yamuna flowing 1.12 metres above danger mark in Delhi

River Yamuna is flowing 1.12 metres above the danger mark in the national capital following heavy downpour in the past few days. Delhi has received 437.2 mm of rainfall in the month of August itself, which is 122 percent above normal. The city has received a total of 680.7 mm of rainfall this season, 43 percent more than the normal. The water level in the river has also risen due to widespread rainfall in the upper catchments area and steady release of water from the Hatnikund Barrage. Our Correspondent reports that Yamuna has been flowing above the danger mark since Friday.A total of over 2000 people have been evacuated from the banks of Yamuna as the river continues to flow above the danger mark creating havoc in the low lying areas. The flood control department has set up 15 relief camps with 350 tents to provide shelter to the evacuated people. Adequate arrangements for medical and food facilities have been made at these camps. Mobile medical teams and water tanks have also been pressed into the service to help the affected people. Over 60 boats with 60 boatmen and divers have been deployed to meet any eventuality. According to Northern railways 18 local trains plying between Shahdara and Old Delhi Railway station have been cancelled and 24 Express and local trains have been diverted. The water level in the river is expected to rise further with Met Department predicting more rain in the coming days and more water expected to be released from the barrage.
