The Senior Asian Wrestling Championship gets underway in New Delhi today.Indian fans would be deprived of watching their Olympic medal winning grapplers Sushil Kumar and Yogeshwar Dutt in action as the two have not yet recovered from their respective injuries. At the K D Jadhav Wrestling Stadium, the Indian contingent will be led by Narsingh Yadav in the five-day championship. The Indian eves will be spearheaded by Geeta Phogat (59 kg). Sharing the burden of expectations from local fans would be her younger sister Babita, who will be competing in the 55 kg category.The championship was last hosted by India in 2010. This time, a total of 236 grapplers from 19 countries will be seen in action. Asian powerhouses such as China, Japan and Kazakhstan, besides the hosts, will be fielding wrestlers in every weight category. The Pakistan team was also invited by the organisers for the continental championship, but its federation did not send any representation.Asia's sport governing body would like to use the championship as an opportunity to show the International Olympic Council the popularity of the sport in the region. The IOC in its wisdom had decided to eliminate wrestling from 2020 Olympics.
