The food articles, mainly vegetables and pulses have turned cheaper as per the Wholesale Price Index (WPI) inflation data for February released today. The index for food articles declined by 3.2 per cent in February as compared to the previous month due to lower price of fruits and vegetables, eggs, pulses, spices, onions and wheat. However, the prices of barley, fish marine, pork, and poultry chicken moved up. The Overall WPI inflation has remained in the negative zone for the 16th straight month at (-)0.91 per cent in February. The WPI inflation for the month of January had stood at (-)0.90 per cent. The index for non food articles group has declined by 2.9 percent. For minerals group, it has declined by 8.1 percent in February due to the lower prices of crude petroleum, iron ore, copper ore and limestone. The index for manufactured products, however, rose by 0.3 percent. To decide its monetary policy, Reserve Bank mainly looks at the retail inflation data, which is expected later in the day.
