WPI inflation falls to 4.95 % in Aug

A deflationary trend continued for the tenth month in a row, as inflation fell to minus 4.95 per cent in August, due to cheaper fuel and vegetables. Wholesale Price Index-based inflation had stood at minus 4.05 per cent in July this year, and 3.85 per cent in August last year. But onions and pulses turned costlier, with inflation for onions at 65.29 per cent, and for pulses at 36.40 per cent, according to official data released today. Overall, the food basket inflation remained in negative territory for second month in a row, at minus 1.13 per cent. Inflation in vegetables stood at minus 21.21 per cent, and in potatoes at minus 51.71 per cent.The inflation rate in the fuel and power segment was minus 16.50 per cent, and in manufactured products minus 1.92 per cent in August. And the inflation data for June has been revised to minus 2.13 per cent, from the provisional estimate of minus 2.4 per cent.
