World’s first ever underwater cabinet meeting concluded a while ago in Maldives today. Chaired by the Maldivian President Mohamed Nasheed, it was a novel way of calling global attention to the debate on climate change. A declaration calling for concerted global action on climate change, ahead of the UN climate conference in Copenhagen was signed at the underwater venue. To call attention to their country’s plight, ministers used hand signals and slates to communicate to ratify the statement calling for rapid greenhouse gas reductions. This statement would be presented at the landmark UN climate change talks in Copenhagen this December. The underwater meeting was part of a wider campaign by international environmental NGO 350.org. They will also participate in a bicycle ride in the capital Male later in the day. President Nasheed will be visiting India on 21st of this month on a two day official invitation of PM Manmohan Singh.
