World Wetlands Day being celebrated today

World Wetlands Day (WWD) is being celebrated on Tuesday. The objective is to draw attention towards the increasing degeneration of wetlands, and the need to conserve them. This year, the theme is Wetlands, Biodiversity, and Climate Change to highlight the impact of climate change for present and future wetland ecosystem health.<br/><br/>The day marks the date of signing of the Convention on Wetlands on February 2, 1971, in the Iranian city of Ramsar on the shores of the Caspian Sea.<br/><br/>At present, there are 25 identified Ramsar sites of international nature covering 6,77,131 hectare area and involving 14 countries. Six more are in process of being designated as Ramsar sites.
