World Travel & Tourism Council Summit gets underway in Abu Dhabi

The two-day long World Travel and Tourism Council,WTTC Global Summit got underway in UAE Capital Abu Dhabi on Tuesday with a call to Governments to to ease visa rules, issue of smarter visas and to reduce taxes on tourists to boost travel and tourism industry. In his keynote address, the President of the WTTC, David Scowsill said such measures would generate up to 112 million additional tourists over the next three years, increase tourism revenues by up to $206 billion, and generate five million extra jobs across the world. The two day summit has been organized as a follow up to the recommendations of the G-20 Summit in Mexico last year.WTTC's latest annual report shows that the travel and tourism industry outperformed the global economy in 2012 growing faster than manufacturing, retail, financial services and communications.The travel and tourism industry's total economic contribution in 2012 – taking into account its direct, indirect and induced impacts – was $6.6 trillion in gross domestic product around 9 per cent of global GDP. Besides the number of jobs in 2012 in travel and tourism increased by five million to 260 million. The total economic contribution of this industry was up by 3 per cent in 2012. International tourist arrivals grew by 4 per cent. December last year was a milestone for the global travel and tourism industry with one billion people travelling internationally for the first time.
