World Summit of Nobel Peace Laureates begins

The Dalai Lama and other Nobel Peace laureates met today for a summit in the Japanese city of Hiroshima on nuclear disarmament. The annual World Summit of Nobel Peace Laureates brings past award recipients together to call attention to their achievements and work, as well as to push the prize’s overall message of human rights and non-violence. Unable to attend were imprisoned Chinese dissident Liu Xiaobo, and Burmese democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi, who has been under detention for 15 of the last 20 years. The U.S. President Barack Obama, who was awarded the Nobel Peace prize in 2009, missed the meeting because of G-20 meeting in Seoul. Former Soviet President Mikhail Gorbachev also missed the summit due to health reasons.
