Today is World No Tobacco Day. This year the focus is on Gender and Tobacco with growing concern on high prevalence of tobacco use among women. The aim is to promote a healthy lifestyle and highlight the harmful effects of nicotine. <br/> <br/>Recognising widespread consumption of nicotine as a cause for alarm, the Ministry of Health and Family welfare in collaboration with several organisations is launching an awareness drive. <br/> <br/>The endeavour is to discourage consumption of nicotine especially its marketing to women. One million people in India die each year due to tobacco consumption. <br/> <br/>According to government, 1.2 crore women in India consume tobacco. 8.3 percent of adolescent girls use tobacco in one form or the other. Smoking reduces fertility in women, leads to spontaneous abortions, still births and low birth-weight babies. <br/> <br/>Delhi Government is also launching an integrated community based pilot project for tobacco control on Monday.<br/>
