A host of issues including Freedom of press, new media and its business prospects, are being deliberated upon during the four-day World Newspaper Congress being held in Hyderabad. The Annual Press Freedom Round Table held last evening on the first day of the congress has focused the need for a model that enabled profitability of the newspaper without deviating from the mission of a free press. The round table has discussed the declining advertisement revenues of the newspapers in the wake of fiscal deficit. The speakers opined that a weak media was susceptible to corruption and the government’s pressure. Need for an environment was stressed where publishers don’t have influence on editors.<br/><br/>Over 1000 delegates including Publishers, Editors and senior executives from 90 countries are taking part in the congress.<br/><br/>President Pratibha Devisingh Patil will formally inaugurate the 62nd World Newspaper Congress in Hyderabad this morning. The ‘2009 WAN-IFRA Golden Pen of Freedom’ will be presented to the Editor-in-Chief of Pakistani newspaper, Friday Times and the Daily Times, Najam Sethi on the occasion. The President who arrived in hYderabad last evening has been accorded a warm welcome at Begumpet airport. Andhra Pradesh governor N D Tiwarai and Chief Minister K Roasiah were among them who welcomed her.<br/>
