World Malaria Day being observed today

Today is World Malaria Day. The day is observed every year to create awareness among the people about this vector borne disease. This year the theme for the Day made by World Health Organisation, WHO, is – ending malaria for good. <br/><br/>According to, World Health Organisation, WHO nearly four lakh people die of malaria every year in the world. Tackling malaria is improving with a 29 per cent drop in mortality rates between 2010 and 2015 and a 21 per cent global decrease in cases. <br/><br/>In India, every year close to one million people suffer from this diseases. Malaria caused by the falciparum parasite is the most serious, and can lead to breathing problems, liver failure, coma and eventual death. <br/><br/>In areas with high malaria concentration, pregnant women and children are most at risk of contracting the disease. <br/><br/>Around Ninety-one countries are working to reduce their malaria burden through the deployment and use of WHO-recommended preventive, diagnostic and treatment tools.

World Malaria Day is being observed today. The objective of the day is to create greater awareness about the disease and its prevention, treatment and control. It is usually transmitted from human to human through the bite of female Anopheles mosquito.<br/> <br/>The theme of this year is 'A Day to Act' emphasizes the need for global efforts to meet 2010 targets of delivering effective and affordable protection and treatment to all people at risk of malaria as called for by UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon.<br/> <br/>AIR correspondent reports, with about one lakh people dying of malaria every year, the World Health Organisation (WHO) has urged a bolder commitment from donors and member countries to bring the disease under control.<br/> <br/>According to WHO, nearly 2.5 million confirmed malaria cases reported annually. Malaria remains a major health problem in South-East Asia Region, where 77 per cent of the population is at risk. <br/> <br/>The most vulnerable populations are generally poor and many of them live in slums, others are tribal populations. The challenge now is to ensure that all who are exposed to malaria can receive quality assured diagnosis and treatment. <br/> <br/>The United Nation has called for universal coverage to all people at risk of malaria to achieve 2015 goal of near – zero deaths.<br/>
