World is moving towards rapid urbanisation which is irreversible: Naidu

Union Minister for Urban Development, Housing and Urban Poverty Alleviation and Information and Broadcasting M. Venkaiah Naidu has said, the world is moving towards rapid urbanisation which is irreversible. He said, 54.4 per cent of the world population is already urbanized. <br/><br/><br/>Speaking at Meet and Greet programme in Vijayawada today, he said, by 2030, migration towards cities is expected to increase to 64 per cent and therefore, India is giving high priority for enhancing facilities with livable conditions and improved basic amenities in cities. <br/><br/><br/>The Minister said, he gave a call for a new urban agenda to be taken up by the UN in this regard. Emphasizing the urgent need for a study on urbanization, he said, still many cities across the world have not recorded development as is expected.<br/>'<br/><br/>Mr Naidu said, getting elected as president of the UN Habitat Governing Council was not an individual honour for him, but a recognition for India as the country's efforts in inclusive urban development were recognised by the world body. He was felicitated by his well-wishers for being elected as the president of the 26th governing council of UN Habitat.
