In Assam, the world-famous Kaziranga National Park threw open for tourists Monday morning. The State Forest Minister Mr. Rockybul Hussain inaugurated the elephant safari in the presence of around 200 foreign and domestic tourists besides the representatives of environmental bodies and tour operators. The park will remain open for tourists till May next year. The 430-square kilometre National Park is the home of over two thousand two hundred rare one-horned rhinoceros besides quite good numbers of Asiatic elephants, tigers, bears, deer and varieties of rare bird species. Kaziranga has achieved notable success in wildlife conservation due to efforts of the Government in recent past. Located on the edge of the Eastern Himalaya biodiversity hotspot, the park combines high species diversity and visibility. AIR Correspondent from Guwahati reports that the Assam Government has taken steps to add some new areas to the National Park considering the security aspects of the natural habitats and ensure their free movement. The Pabitora Wildlife Sanctuary in central Assam, famous for one-horned rhinoceros, wild elephants and buffalos has also opened for tourists since Sunday.
