Today is World Environment Day. This year's theme is Biodiversity, Eco Systems Management and the Green Economy. Several functions are being organised to mark the day across the globe including our country.Meanwhile, according to a global survey conducted by National Geographic Association and Globe Scan, Indian consumers rank as the greenest in the world while Delhi has become country's first city to earn carbon credit.In Uttar Pradesh, various awareness programmes have been organised to celebrate the occasion. The Directorate of Field Publicity Nehru Yuva Kendra and several non-governmental organisations are holding workshops, rallies and competitions to mark the occasion. In Varanasi, the local NGOs have organised awareness building programmes against the rising pollution in the River Ganga. Our Gorakhpur correspondent reports that bicycle rallies, essay and poster competitions, sapling plantation and clean-up campaigns would be launched by the government and non-government bodies.
