World Environment Day being observed today

World Environment Day 2017 will be observed today across the worldand the theme of this year is Connecting People to Nature. <br/><br/>According to United Nations, the theme of this year implores people to get outdoors and into nature, to appreciate its beauty and its importance, and to take forward the call to protect the Earth.<br/><br/>Prime Minister Narendra Modi said that World Environment Day is the right time to reaffirm commitment to protecting the environment and nurturing a better planet. <br/><br/>In a tweet, Mr Modi said, the nation salute the will and determination of all those individuals and organisations working towards protecting the environment. <br/><br/>He said, this year's theme of – Connecting People to Nature is nothing but getting connected with ourselves.<br/><br/>Environment Minister Dr. Harsh Vardhan said, global warming and climate change are adversely affecting the whole world and people should contribute to save the planet.<br/><br/>The State government in Kerala will launch a massive tree planting exercise today on the occasion of world environment day.<br/><br/>This is being organised under the ' Haritha Keralam' project an initiative to make the state green. The government's programme is to plant one crore saplings across the state by involving school students, 'Kudumbashree' (women self-help group) units and civic bodies. This is kerala's initiative to tackle climate change. <br/><br/>Another major initiative to be launched on June 5 is the felling of trees that cause ecological imbalance. Involving school children in the project, the government has decided to distribute 40 lakh saplings–each child will get one sapling which they should plant it at home, school compound or public place. Chief minister Pinarayi Vijayan has urged the people to support the initiative.

World Environment Day being observed today

Today is World Environment Day. The day is observed every year on 5th of June to raise global awareness to take positive environmental action to protect nature and the planet Earth.<br/><br/>In his message, Prime Minister Narendra Modi asked the nation to take a pledge to collectively work towards conserving the precious environment resources, adding that the Earth should be kept clean and green. In a tweet, Mr Modi said, this day is a commitment to protect the environment and live in harmony with the nature. In the 21st edition of Mann Ki Baat programme on All India Radio last month, the Prime Minister had called for protection of the environment saying that conservation of water and forests are people's responsibility.<br/><br/>AIR correspondent reports that several programmes are being organised all over the country to mark the occasion.<br/><br/>Environment Minister Prakash Javadekar has urged citizens to plant a sapling on this day, click photographs and share it on the website wedselfie.nic.in. Addressing an event organised on the occasion in Mumbai, the Minister laid stress on urban forestry. He also said massive tree planting will be taken up in 200 cities. Mr Javadekar said that shoot at sight orders have been given to armed forest guards at Kaziranga which has helped reduce rhino poaching considerably. The Minister released a leaflet on Living With Leopards and CDs on Vulture Conservation.<br/><br/>The theme of this year's World Environment Day is Go Wild For Life. The aim is to stimulate interest in all species under threat and promote zero tolerance for the illegal trade in wildlife. The United Nations has called for a worldwide campaign to take strong action to curb the illegal trade of wildlife products that are threatening the biodiversity of the planet. Elephants, Rhinos, Turtules and Whales are just some of the species that are mercilessly being killed and smuggled for their meat, fur, skin and tusks. This year's World Environment Day celebrations are hosted by Angola, a country seeking to restore its elephant herds, conserve Africa's biodiversity-rich wildlife and safeguard the environment as it continues to rebuild after more than a quarter-century of civil war.

World Environment Day being observed today

World environment day is being observed today across the globe to raise awareness among people about the importance of clean environment in the human life. The theme for the Day is Green Economy: Does it include you? To mark the day and create widespread awareness on the unique biodiversity of the country, the Government today flagged-off the 'Science Express-Biodiversity Special' train in New Delhi. The train was jointly flagged-off by Minister for environment and Forest Jayanti Natrajan and Chief Minister of Delhi, Sheila Dikshit.

Flagging off the train, Mrs. Natrajan stressed the need to take pro-active steps to ensure and nurture environment. She highlighted the importance of environment to the planet. The Environment Minister also asked the citizens to play a pivotal role to save the planet and nature.

Speaking on the ocassion, Delhi Chief Minister, Sheila Dikshit said to make capital more green, Delhi government has increased the green cover from 33 square to 300 square Kilometres. She said that her government has developed two biodiversity parks at Yamuna and Aravali hills to increase greenery. Mrs. Dikshit said besides, Delhi government is also taking several other measures and steps to make Delhi green and clean.

On the ocassion, Mrs. Natrajan and Mrs. Dikshit also gave away the Indira Gandhi Paryavaran Puraskar awards to two organisations to make measurable impact in the protection of environment.

Our Correspondent reports that 'Science Express-Biodiversity Special' train will halt at 100 stations during two years. Between today to 22nd of December, the train will travel almost 18 thousand Kilometre. It will halt for three to 4 days at each stations. Of the 16 coaches of the express train, eight are solely dedicated to immense biodiversity spread across the bio-geograpical zones. These 8 coaches highlighting the bio-diversity zones in the country will also focus on a range of Biological diversity and livelihood.
