In the FIFA World Cup, Brazil and the Netherlands are the latest two teams to move into the quarter-finals. In the second round matches yesterday, while Brazil recorded a convincing 3-0 win over Chile, the Netherlands beat debutants Slovakia 2-1.
At Ells Park in Johannesburg, Chile made a bright start, but Brazil quickly got into their stride. Brazil took the lead in the 34th minute when Maicon swung in a corner and centre-back Juan rose the highest to head past rival goal-keeper Bravo. Four minutes later, striker Luis Fabiano made it 2-0. The third and final goal came through Robinho in the 59th minute.
It is Brazil's 47th win in 66 matches against Chile, who have only seven wins.
Earlier, in Durban, the Netherlands clinically ended Slovakia's giantkilling run at the World Cup with a goal in each half. Arjen Robben scored the first in the 18th minute. Wesley Sneijder scored the second in the 84th minute. Slovakia, who eliminated defending champions Italy last week, rarely came close to repeating that feat. However, they got a consolation goal when Robert Vittek converted a penalty in the last few seconds of the injury time.
In their quarter-final, the Netherlands will play Brazil on Friday. So far, six teams have reached the last eight stages. They are: Uruguay, Ghana, Argentina, Germany, the Netherlands and Brazil. The Netherlands will now face Brazil in the quarter-final on Friday.
