World Cup Football (27-06-2010)

In the Second Round matches of the FIFA World Cup yesterday, Uruguay beat South Korea 2-1, and Ghana defeated the United States by the same margin. Both teams qualified for the quarter-finals.
In the first fixture at Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium in Port Elizabeth, Luis Suarez struck twice, once in each half, to give Uruguay a 2-1 victory over South Korea. With his double strike, Suarez joined Argentine Gonzalo Higuain and Spaniard David Villa on top of goal-scorers' list with three strikes each. In the absorbing match, South Korea's lone goal came in the 68th minute through Lee Chung-yong.

The Uruguayans booked their quarter-final berth for the first time after the 1970 World Cup in Mexico.

Uruguay will now meet Ghana in their quarter-final on Friday.

At Rustenburg, Ghana kept alive African hopes by defeating the United States 2-1. The match-winner came through Asamoah Gyan in the third minute of extra-time. Earlier, both teams had finished 1-1 at the end of the 90-minute regulation period. Kevin-Prince Boateng put Ghana ahead in the 5th minute. Landon Donovan equalised for the United States with a 62-minute penalty conversion.
Ghana are only the third African team to make it through to the World Cup quarter-finals.

Two matches are scheduled for today in the World Cup Football Second Round.
In the first fixture, Germany meet England in Bloemfontein at 1930 hours.
In the second match at Midnight, Argentina will take on Mexico at Soccer City in Johannesburg.
