‘World Tiger Day’ is being celebrated across the globe today. The day is observed to spread awareness about the plight of tigers and their dwindling number across the globe. The good news for India on the day is that the tiger population in the country has increased from over 1400 in 2006 to over 1700 in 2010. According to the detailed report of the All India Tiger Estimation released in New Delhi, particularly the states of Uttarakhand, Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra and Karnataka have shown an increase in tiger density. The inclusion of Sunderbans, some portions of North east and parts of Maharashtra have also contributed to the increase. According to the World Wildlife Fund, WWF, estimates, there are only about 3200 tigers left in the wild. Out of these almost 60 to 65 percent are in the Indian Jungles. AIR correspondent reports that a massive programme has been launched by the Government for protection of wildlife in the country particularly the tigers which also happens to be India's National Animal.
