World Bank Prez Zoellick expected to meet Dr Manmohan Singh

World Bank President Robert B. Zoellick is expected to meet the Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh, the Finance Minister Mr. Pranab Mukherjee and the Deputy Chairman of the Planning Commission Montek Singh Ahulwalia on Friday to discuss the role of the Bank in meeting its development priorities of India.According to a world Bank Press Release the discussions with the prime minister and other top government functionaries will also cover cooperation on global issues, including preparations for the upcoming G-20 meetings. The World Bank and India work closely on climate change, biodiversity including saving the wild tiger trade apart from strengthening co-operation to accelerate growth .This can be achieved by providing better infrastructure and efficient social services for its people.On the eve of his visit to India Zoellick described New Delhi a player on the global stage and a rising economic power. AIR correspondent adds that the Bank has more than 70 active projects in India, including several large projects in the critical area of infrastructure.During his stay in India he travelled to Bihar, where the Bank is helping the state government with a rehabilitation programme for areas affected by the Kosi floods. The bank Chief signed an MOU with the Bihar Government to increase support to the state government for the rehabilitation programme of people affected by the Kosi floods. Bank plans to give the Bihar government 220 million dollars.After his talks with the environment minister Jairam Ramesh in New Delhi today the two sides agreed to further strengthen their partnership to advance green-growth agenda in the country. Welcoming the discussions, Jiaram Ramesh noted New Delhi is clear about the need to reflect and factor in ecological concerns into our growth process so that the benefits of growth can be achieved without critically straining the environment. He informed that New Delhi is working at strengthening our environmental regulators as a probable area of future engagement. Applauding the government’s efforts, Mr Zoellick said that New Delhi is working to integrate its growth objectives and need to overcome poverty with the sustainability of natural resources and the well-being of future generations. AIR correspondent reports that the two discussed the vision for a strong sustainable development agenda in India. The Bank has stepped up its financial support for four major projects for sustainable development.
