The World Bank has pledged 2 billion US dollars aid to Bangladesh to tackle climate change. This is the second large investment announcement made by the President of the Bank who was on a 2-day visit in Dhaka. Jim Yong Kim said that Bangladesh is extremely vulnerable to climate change accounting for almost 70% of all storm surges in the world.

But with active community participation, it has put in place disaster coping mechanisms like early warning systems, cyclone shelters, evacuation plans, coastal embankments, reforestation schemes, which has greatly reduced the impact of recent cyclones and floods.

The 2 billion dollars aid package is aimed at further developing the resilience of the people at a time when climate change is putting their lives and livelihoods at greater risk. Bangladesh is the largest recipient of International Development Association assistance, having received over 24 billion US dollars since Independence.
