World AIDS Day is being observed today

Today is World AIDS Day. It is marked on 1st of December every year to highlight the work done to eliminate the epidemic. The day is also observed to extend support to those who have to live with the life-threatening condition caused by the Human Immunodeficiency Virus, HIV. The first World AIDS Day was observed in 1988. HIV remains a major public health issue that affects millions of people across the world. The virus attacks the immune system and reduces its resistance to other diseases, thereby putting the life of the patient at risk. Founded in 1988, World AIDS Day was the first ever global health day. The theme for this year is 'End Inequalities, End AIDS, End Pandemics.'
”
”Today, scientific advances have been made in HIV treatment, there are laws to protect people living with HIV. Despite this, people do not know the facts about how to protect themselves and others, and stigma and discrimination remain a reality for many people living with the condition.
”
”World AIDS Day is important because it reminds the public and government that HIV has not gone away – there is still a vital need to increase awareness, fight prejudice and improve education.
