Work started on development of monitoring system to improve rail safety: Govt

Minister of Railways Suresh Prabhu today said an Expression of Interest (EoI) for development of On Board Rolling Stock Condition Monitoring System has been called for. Mr Prabhu said offers against this EoI have been received from both Indian and global firms. <br/><br/>Replying to supplementaries in the Lok Sabha, Mr Prabhu said the bidders will be asked to submit their plan for indigenization of such systems under Make in India campaign. The minister informed the House that this system after being put in place will monitor the health and safety of key components of the coaches, freight cars and locomotives that would finally result in improved safety.<br/><br/>Mr Prabhu said Railway is undertaking monitoring of railway tracks as per laid down systems. He said maintenance, upkeep and improvement in the condition of coaches is a continuous process and coaches are periodically replaced on age.<br/><br/>He said safety is being accorded the highest priority by Indian Railways and all possible steps are undertaken on a continual basis to prevent accidents and to enhance safety.<br/><br/>In reply to another question, Mr Prabhu said his ministry has drawn up an investment plan of 8.56 lakh crore rupees over the next five years (2015 to 2019) as indicated in the Rail Budget 2015-16. He said FDI in rail sector will be allowed in suburban corridor projects through PPP, high speed train projects, railway electrification and signalling systems among others.
