Sri Lankan President Maithripala Sirisena has said, he will not make any war hero a suspect in cases of alleged war crimes. Speaking at the opening of the newly constructed building at the Defense Services School in Kurunegala yesterday, the President said, it is the responsibility and duty of the government to protect war heroes who fought for the motherland.<br/><br/>His comments came as United Nations Human Rights Council, UNHRC passed a resolution providing for two years extension to Sri Lankan government for war crimes probe and accountability measures. Sri Lankan government is facing stiff opposition from a group led by former President Mahinda Rajapakse who is trying to galvanise hardline Sinhalese on the issue. There are allegations that thousands of LTTE cadre and civilians were killed during last phase of war which ended in May, 2009.<br/><br/>The President however made it clear that he cannot protect those armed forces personnel who are found guilty of acts that are not connected to national security and those who are guilty of killing media persons or sportsmen. There were several killings of journalists and civil society activists during Rajapakse's 10 year rule and many of them are linked to his family members and military establishments.
