Today we will bring to you the stories of women environmentalists. Purnima Devi Burman, a biologist from Kamrup, Assam is busy conserving the bird, the Greater Adjutant Stork which was getting endangered. </span><br />” <span style="color: #222222;"> </span><br />” <span style="color: #222222;">The bird is mainly found in Cambodia and India. In India, the birds are found in Assam and Bihar. Assam has the largest breeding colony. Purnima Burman tells that people never wanted these birds in their vicinity. These birds were considered as bad omens. She along with 400 local female frontline workers have been successful in educating people about the importance of these birds. She founded the Hargila army, which rescues and conserves the Greater Adjutant Stork.</span><br />” <span style="color: #222222;"> </span><br />” <span style="color: #222222;">Talking to All India Radio News Ms Burman shared the reason behind an increase in the number of these birds. She said the artificial breeding platform set up by them proved to be helpful. After the breeding programme, Assam has 270 nests of these birds. 400 women are a part of the Hargila Army which works to conserve these birds. She believes the woman should be a part of the decision making process. Purnima Devi Burman is the recipient of Nari Shakti and Green Oscar Award for her movement to protect the Greater Adjutanat Stork. </span><br />” <br />
