A Chilean air force plane, with 21 people on board, has crashed near a remote Island. Media reports said debris from the plane has been near the Juan Fernandez islands, where the plane was heading when it disappeared. The Associated Press said the plane went down after two landing attempts in strong winds and it disappeared from sight. Rescuers are searching the Pacific Ocean for possible survivors. Popular Chilean TV host Felipe Camiroaga and a camera crew were on board the plane. They were heading to the island for a programme on reconstruction on the island following last year's earthquake and subsequent tsunami. The Juan Fernandez islands are 670 kilometers off Chile's coast.Authorities said a navy frigate has been sent with a helicopter to carry out search and rescue work. A Hercules 130 plane is also due to join the search shortly. The Chilean President Sebastian Pinera said that his thoughts were with the families of those on board. This is a very hard blow for our country, he said.
