Winter chill continued in North India. In Himachal Pradesh, Shimla recorded a low of 2.1 deg C, while Solan recorded a low of minus 0.4 deg C, followed by Sundernagar at 0.1 deg C. Water supply remained affected in some parts of Shimla town and upper areas of Theog and Narkanda as water in pipes froze after mercury dipped below zero deg C. The Hindustan-Tibet National Highway, blocked since January 14 after heavy snowfall, was reopened on Tuesday for traffic up to Jeory. But the Highway remained closed beyond Bhabha Nagar, while the Samdoh-Kaza road is also blocked by heavy snow. In Jammu and Kashmir, mercury in Kargil town in Ladakh region plunged by more than four notches and settled at a low of minus 21 deg C.In Uttar Pradesh, thick fog has again enveloped a large area in the eastern and western region. This has affected the rail and road traffic. The minimum temperature has been recorded as low as 4 degrees during last 24 hours. The cold conditions continued in Punjab and Haryana with the minimum temperature in most parts of the region plummeting to up to four degrees Celsius below normal. Delhiites, however, enjoyed a pleasant day with mercury rising to 22.7 deg C, two degrees above normal on Tuesday.
