Wimbledon: Federer, Sharapova make shock exits; Sania, Bhupathi, Bopanna advance to second round

Defending Champion Roger Federer and Maria Sharapova have made shocking early exits from the Wimbledon Tennis Championships, in two biggest upsets after Spain's Rafael Nadal crashed out in the first round. In the Men's Singles second round yesterday, World Number Three Federer was stunned by the unseeded Ukrainian Sergiy Stakhovsky, 7-6, 6-7, 5-7, 6-7.In the Women's Singles, World Number Three Sharapova lost to the 131st-ranked qualifier Michelle Larcher De Brito of Portugal in straight sets, 3-6, 4-6.Second seed Victoria Azarenka of Belarus and Frenchman Jo-Wilfried Tsonga are among the 7 players who have pulled out of the prestigious competition due to injury. Besides Azarenka and Tsonga, Steve Darcis, who beat Rafael Nadal in the first round, Marin Cilic, John Isner, Radek Stepanek and Yaroslava Shvedova have pulled out.Meanwhile, India's Sania Mirza, Mahesh Bhupathi and Rohan Bopanna, with their partners, have advanced to the second round. In the Women's Doubles opening round, the sixth seeded Indo-American pair of Sania Mirza and Liezel Huber defeated the Czech team of Klara Zakopalova and Renata Voracova, 6-3, 3-6, 6-1. In the Men's Doubles first round, Bhupathi and his Austrian partner Julian Knowle edged past the Argentine-Spanish combination of Leonardo Mayer and Albert Ramos, 6-2, 6-7, 6-4, 6-2, while the Indo-French duo of Rohan Bopanna and Edouard Roger-Vasselin beat the Russian-Finn pair of Dmitry Tursunov and Jarkko Nieminen, 7-6, 6-2, 7-6.Leander Paes and his Czech partner Radek Stepanek will begin their Doubles campaign today.
