The Election Commission has warned political parties that it will take stern steps if the model code of conduct or poll laws are violated during the forthcoming Assembly elections in five states.<br/><br/> In a letter, citing a recent Supreme Court judgement, the Commission has asked parties to desist from making remarks on the basis of religion which, it said, may create disharmony between different sections of society. <br/><br/>The poll panel said, it will not remain a silent spectator if the provisions of election laws are violated. It said, peace and tranquillity during the poll process is absolutely essential for free and peaceful conduct of elections.<br/><br/>In a landmark verdict, earlier this month, the Supreme Court had ruled that no politician can seek vote in the name of caste, creed or religion.<br/><br/>The Election Commission's direction also came in the backdrop of recent controversial remarks by BJP MP Sakshi Maharaj on population boom. The poll body has already a issued show cause notice to him in this regard. <br/><br/>It has asked him to file his reply by this morning as to why no action should be taken against him.<br/><br/>
