Sri Lankan President Gotabaya Rajapaksa has asserted that he will not submit to pressure from Non Governmental Organisations (NGOs). The President told monks at a Buddhist temple that he has been given a mandate by the people and he will work according to that mandate.
''
'' Mr. Gotabaya said that he was elected for a purpose and he needs to ensure that the people get what they wanted. The President criticised the investigations conducted by some officers of Criminal Investigations Department claiming they conducted it to fall in line with the expectations of some NGOs.
''
'' Meanwhile, Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa has ordered an investigation into Tamil road name boards being vandalised or damaged in parts of the country. A government functionary said the Prime Minister had instructed the police to arrest those responsible for removing the Tamil boards.
''
'' The order came as few Tamil street name boards were found vandalised at some locations in the country. The boards have been repaired following the order. The change in regime came following Gotabaya's victory at Presidential elections held last Saturday but minorities including Tamils and Muslims had overwhelmingly voted against him.
