Chief election commissioner S.Y. Quraishi has said that he would make all out efforts to curb money power in elections for which the Election Commission had already set up an expenditure monitoring division. In Dehradun, briefing the media persons about his visit to Uttarakhand, Mr. Quraishi said that representatives of seven political parties apprised him of the various problems and also pitched in with suggestions. On the question of possibility of early election in Uttarkhand, he said that the commission would take a decision in this regard only after completing its visit to all the five states where elections are due next year.AIR correspondent reports, Chief Election Commissioner placed voter education high on his agenda and said that the Election Commission would conduct drives to pull first time voters and youths. Mr. Quraishi also took a tough stand on paid news and said that it amounted to duping the readers and viewers who were unaware that it was an advertisement. He said that Election Commission would be setting up a media committee to ensure that the menace of paid news does not corrupt the election system. Expressing satisfaction over the preparedness of the state for elections he asked state government to complete the transfer process of officials by end of this month in view of assembly elections due early next year.
