Will follow Punjab's Holy Kali Bein model to clean Ganga: Uma Bharti

Union Minister for Water Resources, River Development and Ganga Rejuvenation, Uma Bharti said that the Centre would follow the model of cleaning 'Kali Bein' for the ongoing Ganga Rejuvenation Plan. 'Kali bein' is a rivulet of river Beas in Punjab which has a religious importance. It was cleaned with public participation by environmentalist Balbir Singh Seechewal.<br/><br/>The Minister was at Sultanpur Lodhi on Tuesday evening to see the efforts of Seechewal to clean the polluted rivulet. She said this is what the government is planning to do to clean Ganga. She said her ministry would soon organize a meeting of sarpanches of 1,619 villages situated along the Ganga and engage some of them as volunteers to clean the river. <br/><br/>She said like the Kali Bein model the ministry is also aiming to develop a plan for 118 towns wherein the treated water is not discharged in the river again and is used for irrigation and other purposes.<br/><br/>Earlier, Uma Bharati inaugurated a two-day Regional Convention of Water Users Associations (WUAs) Presidents at Punjab Agricultural University (PAU) in Ludhiana.
