Chief Election Commissioner Dr. S Y Quraishi has said that stringent measures will be initiated to check money and muscle power in the elections. After reviewing poll preparedness for the forthcoming Manipur Assembly elections at Imphal, Dr. Quraishi said separate expenditure monitoring division under one Director General had been set up by the Commission. He said a shadow account register for each candidate would be opened to account the actual election expenditure incurred by the candidates. The Chief Election Commission along with two other Election Commissioners V S Sampath and M S Brahma held discussions with representatives of seven political parties, including one local party. Quraishi said the problem of paid news also figured during the meeting with representatives of political parties. He said media certification and monitoring committee would be set up in each district to keep strict watch on paid news.
