Will bring all states on board on anti-terror agency: Govt

The Centre says it will talk to states opposing the setting up of the National Counter Terrorism and try to solve the issue. Talking to reporters Minister of State in Prime Minister's office V. Narayasamy said the Government would take up the issue with the aggrieved states.

Union Home Secretary RK Singh said in New Delhi that the agency was being set up for better coordination among various agencies to fight terrorism effectively. He said there was no need for prior consultation with the states for issuing the notification as it was being established under the existing laws.

The BJP has opposed the setting up of the National Counter Terrorism Centre, saying it was against federal autonomy. Party spokesperson Rajiv Pratap Rudy said the states were not happy the way the Centre was functioning. BJP leader Arun Jaitley said fight against terror and respect for federalism must co-exist.

The Congress on the other hand says that some of the opposition- ruled Chief Ministers opposing the National Counter Terrorism Centre were part of the NDA, which had passed the controversial POTA in 2002.

Party Spokesperson Renuka Chowdhary said there were several partners in the NDA government when the draconian laws were passed.

Several Chief Ministers, including Mamata Banerjee, J Jayalalitha, Naveen Patnaik and Raman Singh, are opposed to the move.
