Minister of State for Skill Development and Entrepreneurship Rajiv Pratap Rudy has said a whole ecosystem on skill development is being put in place by integrating the efforts of 24 different ministries and several other departments.

Responding to supplementaries during Question Hour in Rajya Sabha today, he said, long term skilling through ITI's are operational and short term skilling in coordination with the industrial sector depending upon the real need of skilled labour force is being undertaken.

Efforts on handicrafts skilling is being made under the artisan skilling. Answering questions on Skill University, Mr Rudy said responses from all Central Ministries and state governments had been sought and 18 central ministries have favoured the idea while the Human Resource Development Ministry and the Department of Industrial Policy and Promotion did not concur.

He further said, none of the state governments has responded with its opinion and added, since Universities are being established by the state governments, a decision on Skill University will be taken after securing the opinion of the states.

Responding to the suggestion of absorbing all apprentices by the PSUs, the minister said the idea will have retrograde effect as the PSUs would be reluctant to take in more apprentices. He clarified that the concept of apprenticeship is to make the students get training in the industry so that more employable workforce could be made available in the job market.
