A white paper on the functioning of Railways during the last five years, presented in Parliament, says that performance in traffic growth during this period was below par.

It also says that the contribution of railway industry to the national GDP remained stagnant at 1.18 per cent during these five yeas when Lalu Prasad was the Railway Minister.

The paper also highlights the inadequacies and weaknesses in the existing accounting system, which shows inflated surplus. Railway Minister Mamata Banerjee has said that financial turnaround of the Railways has been the topic of discussion and debate and an attempt has been made to take a dispassionate look at the issue in the white paper.
