Wheat production is expected to touch an all-time high of 86 million tonnes this rabi season as crop prospects look bright on account of a good monsoon. Talking to reporters in New Delhi, Agriculture Secretary P K Basu said wheat crop prospects are expected to be encouraging as reports say there will be abundant sunshine and no pest menace in wheat fields during the rabi season. Mr. Basu said that the target of wheat production this year is 84 million tonnes, but it may touch 86 million tonnes. He said the country has produced a record 85.93 million tonnes of wheat in the last season.Mr. Basu noted that the good monsoon has boosted soil moisture and water level in reservoirs. He added that farmers are preparing their fields to sow wheat, the main rabi crop.. Planting would first begin in Madhya Pradesh and later in other key growing states like Punjab and Haryana.Our correspondent adds that wheat, mustard, gram, peas and barley are some important crops cultivated during the rabi season, which begins from mid-October and ends by April end.
