Wheat procurement begins in UP

<br/>In Uttar Pradesh the government has fixed target of purchasing 39 lakh Metric Tons wheat during current Rabi crop 2010-2011. About 4500 purchase centres are being set up by different government agencies across the state for making purchase wheat from the farmers. These centres would be set up in a manner that a farmer is not required to travel more than seven kilometers to reach a purchase centre<br/><br/>AIR Lucknow correspondent reports that the government has fixed its Minimum Support Price 1100 rupees per quintal for procurement and that is at the same level as that of the Centre. Under the policy government agencies would directly procure Wheat from the farmers through purchase centres where immediate payments would be made.<br/><br/>The purchase centres for procurement would be effective till June 30 and purchase centres would function on all days except gazetted holidays notified by the Centre. The government has said that the Food Corporation of India FCI would procure one lakh MT wheat during the season. The officials have clarified that procurement targets could be revised if supply of what continues at purchase centres.
