In Bangladesh, most of the 1700 Ready-Made Garment (RMG) factories inspected under two Western Retailer groups, set up under an ILO-funded inspection project, have found to have serious fire safety flaws. The inspection findings have been shared with government review panel. Industries Minister Amir Hossain Amu told reporters in Dhaka today that Corrective Action Plans are being prepared to ensure acceptably safe working standards. Bangladesh has been under intense international pressure to improve the working conditions in the garment industry after over 1100 workers were killed in the Rana Plaza building collapse in April 2013. Around 4 million workers, 80% of which are women, work in the RMG sector which brings about 22 billion US Dollar in export earnings to the country.
