West Indies beat Zimbabwe by 73 runs via Duckworth-Lewis method

The West Indies today defeated Zimbabwe by 73 runs via Duckworth-Lewis method to win their second Pool-B game of the Cricket World Cup, after a loss to giant killers Ireland in their opener. Opting to bat first in Canberra, the Windies scored a formidable 372 for 2 riding on Chris Gayle's 215, World Cup's first ever double century. Marlon Samuels scored an unbeaten 133. Later, rain interrupted and Zimbabwe was given a revised target of 363 from 48 overs. Zimbabwe's middle and lower order showed great resilience, but the West Indian target proved a little too much at the end, and Zimbabwe were bundled out for 289 in 44.3 overs. Jerome Taylor and Jason Holder bagged 3 wickets each. With a breath-taking show at Canberra's Manuka Oval, Chris Gayle has written his name in the history books not just for becoming the first ever to score a double ton at this biggest stage of 50-over cricket but for breaking a number of records. He also became the first non-Indian to score a double century, which came of just 139 balls, the fastest ever. Gayle, with today's other centurian Samuels, shared 372 runs, highest ever World Cup partnership. They displaced Rahul Dravid and Sourav Ganguly's 318-run stand against Sri Lanka in the 1999 World Cup. Gayle is now also the only player to have a triple century in Tests, double century in ODIs, and a ton in T-20s. However, the giant opener, who bludgeoned 16 sixes today, missed by just one more from creating a record of most number maximums by a single player in an innings. Man of the match Gayle rounded off the most memorable day of his life by bagging 2 wickets and a brilliant catch at extra-cover. Tomorrow, Ireland will take on UAE in Pool-B at Brisbane. The match will begin at 9 AM Indian Time.
