A private hospital's alleged refusal to treat some injured persons enraged locals in 24 South Paraganas district, who ransacked the nursing home. Police had to use batons and fire in the air to quell the mob. IGP (Law and Order) Surojit Kar Purokayastha said six persons, including two women and a five-year-old child, were killed and several others injured when a mini-truck carrying 30 persons collided with a truck this morning at Patuli area in the district. The injured were rushed to the nearby Peerless Hospital, however, the locals alleged that the nursing home turned down their plea to offer emergency first-aid to the injured and demanded money to be deposited in advance before initiating treatment. The hospital authorities were not available for comment. The alleged refusal led to heated exchanges between the hospital staff and the locals and soon a mob of over 200 people gatecrashed the hospital and set fire to furniture, medical equipment, including stretchers, and ransacked the restaurant inside the hospital. Meanwhile, West Bengal Sunderbans affairs development minister Kanti Ganguly visited the spot and persuaded the mob to retreat.
