The Home Minister, Mr. P. Chidambaram today said that West Bengal is one of India's worst-governed States. Addressing a press conference at Salt Lake City in Kolkata he said, not only the law and order situation is extremely bad in West Bengal, but its cash position is also precarious as the State has had to resort to overdraft eight times during the last one year. Dwelling on the law and order situation, the Home Minister blamed the ruling CPI (M) Government for providing arms to its cadres to indulge in violence. On the question of alleged links between Maoists and Trinamool Congress, the Home Minister said that Trinamool Congress endorses the Centre's view that wherever or whenever the Naxalites indulge in violence, they should be dealt with harshly. Referring to the bad financial health of the State, Mr. Chidambaram said draconian efforts will have to be taken to restore West Bengal to good financial shape. Meanwhile, the Election Commission has appointed S.Srinivasan, the Chief Electoral officer of Odisha as special observer for overseeing the third phase Assembly polls. 50 general observers, 11 expenditure observers besides two police observers have also been appointed to monitor the polls process. AIR correspondent reports that campaigning is in full swing in all the 75 seats spread over Kolkata, North and South 24 Pargana districts with Bollywood stars also hitting the campaign trail.
