West Bengal government observed Save Water Day today. <br />'' <br />'' Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and eminent persons of different fields, School students took part in a 'Padayatra in Kolkata this afternoon to spread the message of water conservation. <br />'' <br />'' The 'Padayatra began from Jorashanko Thakurbari and ended at the base of Gandhi Statue in the city. A pledge for conservation of water was also taken on the occasion. <br />'' <br />'' Later, addressing a gathering Chief Minister said that her government started a programme of digging ponds throughout the state for conservation of water since coming into power in 2011. About 3 lakhs ponds have been dug till now to deal with the water scarcity. <br />'' <br />'' She announced that the Day will be observed in the state each year from now to create awareness among people to check misuse of water. <br />'' <br />'' The Chief Minister directed Panchayat, Agriculture and Irrigation Departments to take steps for water conservation with an aim to save water and save life besides appealing citizens to come forward for joining such social programme. The day was also observed in Districts and Blocks of the State. <br />''
