The West Bengal Forest Department has filed a FIR against Railways for death of seven elephants at Banarhat in Jalpaiguri district. The State Forest Minister Mr. Ananta Roy told in Kolkata today that the goods train which rammed into herd of elephants was running with high speed than stipulated for plying in the elephant corridor in North Bengal. The State government has sought the intervention of Railway Minister Ms. Mamata Banerjee and Union Forest and Environment Minister Mr. Jairam Ramesh to stop recurrence of such incident. Mr. Roy informed that at least 25 elephants were killed in the forest area of North Bengal by speeding train in last 2 years. As already reported seven elephants were killed when a goods train hit them at Banarhat in North Bengal last night.
