The Platinum Jubilee celebration of the West Bengal Assembly began in Kolkata today with a call to uphold the majesty of legislature. Inaugurating the celebration the state Governor Mr. M.K. Narayanan termed the event as a historic occasion for the Parliamentary democracy in the country. The Governor hoped that the West Bengal Assembly must respond to the aspirations of under privileged people and resurgent India. Speaking on the occasion, the Chief Minister Ms Mamta Bannerjee lauded the role of the West Bengal Assembly to uphold the Parliamentary democracy. She said though the assembly has witnessed different political changes, it has passed many landmark bills such as land and land revenue, Panchayat, Singur land rehabilitation bill for benefit of the people and development of the state. The Speaker of the House Mr. Biman Bandyopadhyaya presided over the function. Our Kolkata correspondent reports that former Lok Sabha Speaker Mr. Somnath Chatterjee and eight members of the House who won the assembly election for eight times have been honoured. The exhibition on the role of Bengal in freedom movement and two seminars have also been organised to mark the two-day long celebrations.
