West Bengal joined the rest of the nation in celebrating Independence Day with variety of programmes amid tight security. The main programme was held at Barrackpur Gandhi Ghat where the Governor, Mr. M.K. Narayanan paid floral tribute at the
Martyrs' Column. In Kolkata, the Chief Minister, Ms. Mamata Banerjee hoisted the national tricolour in front of the State Secretariat. Ms. Banerjee also garlanded at the statue of the great hero of the freedom movement Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose on the occasion. Other programmes of the day include all-faith prayer meetings, seminars and reception of freedom fighters.

In Darjeeling hills, National Flags are fluttering atop of Government and private buildings including shops and business establishments giving a festive look all over the hills. Impressive parade, march past, drill displays presented by the school students marked the day. Braving the inclement weather people in large number thronged the programme venues all over Darjeeling hills.
