Week-long celebrations of 16th Vijay Diwas come to close in Kargil today

In Jammu & Kashmir, the week-long celebrations of 16th Vijay Diwas come to a close today at Drass in Kargil district of Ladakh division. The celebrations are being conducted at Kargil War Memorial, Drass to mark the victory and honour kargil War martyrs. The main functions began yesterday and will conclude today. People from all over country have reached Drass Kargil to Celebrate Kargil Vijay Diwas. The Kargil war was fought from 3rd May to 26 July in 1999 against Pakistan intruders who in the winters of 1998 transgressed into this side of territory along the Line of Control and occupied fortified defences overlooking the National Highway 1-A in Drass, Kargil and Batalik of the Ladakh region. Kargil Vijay Diwas Celebrations are a meaningful and earnest attempt by the Indian Army every year to pay solemn tributes to its martyrs, honour their memories and to remind the country of the constant and silent sacrifices made by the men and women in uniform to protect the sovereignty of country's territory.<br/><br/>AIR correspondent reports, Army Chief Gen Dalbir Singh Suhag yesterday laid a wreath at Kargil War Memorial in Drass. On the occasion he said his troops will never allow a repeat of the 1999 Kargil conflict with Pakistan. Northern Command Army Commander Gen D.S. Hooda will lay a wreath at the Memorial today morning. He alongwith his wife Mrs. Rashmi Hooda, President of Northern Command Army Wives Welfare Association, will interact with VEER NARIS , the widows of Kargil War heroes. Members of Pune based Association for Blinds participated in the yesterday's celebrations by lighting lamps in memory of heroes. Several serving and retired army personnel, Kargil War veterans, next of kin of martyrs are participating in the commemoration. Four Param Vir Chakras (PVCs), nine Maha Vir Chakras (MVCs), 53 Vir Chakras and other medals had been awarded to felicitate the heroes of the war.
